Destination Description

The southwestern of the Dominican Republic is one of the most beautiful region in the country because the diversity. Beautiful beaches, Mountains, rivers, the major lake in the Caribbean, Caves, mines and a very nice people are just part of the region.

LAGO ENRIQUELLO (Lake Enriquillo):

The biggest in the Caribbean and one of unique salt water lake in the world!

Lake Enriquillo (located at 18.30′N, 71.35′W) is one of only a few saltwater lakes in the world inhabited by crocodiles. Lake Enriquillo is located in a.the west to near Neiba Bay in the Dominican Republic; is part of the country biodiversity and UNIQUE in the Caribbean! Part of this area is call Jaragua National Park.

The rift valley is a former marine strait, and was created around 1 million years ago when the water level fell and by sediments of the Yaque del Sur River. The lake is 9 to 12 miles (15 to 20 km) wide. Known as the Cul-de-Sac Depression in Haiti and the Hoya de Enriquillo in the Dominican Republic, parts of the rift valley are below sea level and are covered by large salt lakes.

Lake Enriquillo covers an area of 102 square miles (265 km) and is the lowest point in the Caribbean falling 144 feet (44 m) below sea level. Its drainage basin includes 10 minor river systems. The rivers that rise in the Neiba Mountains to the north (lower center and lower right of the image) are perennial. Those rivers that rise in the Baoruco Mountains to the south (upper center and upper left of the image) are intermittent.

Lake Enriquillo has no outlet. The lake's water level varies because of a combination of storm-driven precipitation events and the region's high evaporation rate. Salinity in the lake can vary between 33 ppt to over 100 ppt. Tremors in the region are common. The lake contains 3 islands: Isla Barbarita, Islita and Isla Cabritos. The last one is the largest of all and contains a National Park famous for the crocodiles and flamingos. When water levels drop as a result of dry spells, the islands are usually linked to each other by sandbars.

Sulfur Hot water

The Las Marias sulfur hot springs are found in an oak forest by the village of La Descubierta in the lake's vicinity. Cold water baths are at Las Barias very close to Las Caritas, tainos graffities coves.

Polo Magnety Hill

Polo Magnetico is another attraction un Barahona. Polo is a municipality of the.Barahona in southwestern, known for its green and high mountains and for growing fine coffee. The small town of Polo is also known for having El Polo Magnrtico (the magnetic pole), an area on a mountain near the village. If a car is stopped at the right place, and put in neutral, the car seems to be rolling up the hill. This is type of.optical.ilusion.known as a gravity hill which is caused by the shape of the slope and the surrounding landscape.

Sierra del Bahoruco National Park

The arid southwestern portion of the Dominican Republic is considered an excellent example of climatic stability with a geological foundation of carbonated substratum. An area of interest to many scientists and botanists, the limestone sub-terrain is sedimentary rock that contains important species of algae. The park also contains the Bahia de Caldera National Monument which was established to protect the great Las Salinas sand dunes from erosion.

Orchid lovers will find Sierra del Bahoruco heavenly with 166 species, 32 of which are known to be endemic to this particular park. Nineteen endemic species of birds also flourish here including the rolita, pajaro bobo and the stolid flycatcher.

A very remote park with few surrounding tourist facilities, most visits require a four-wheel-drive vehicle to explore the crystallized limestone peaks.

Larimar (also lorimar) is a rare blue variety of pectolite found only in the Dominican Republic, in the Caribeean. Its coloration varies from white, light-blue, green-blue to deep blue. The deep blue variant is known as volcanic blue. Los Chupaderos The most important outcrop of blue pectolite is located at Los Chupaderos, in the section of Los Checheses, about 10 kilometers southwest of the city of Barahona, in the south-western region of the Dominican Republic. It is a single mountainside now perforated with approximately 2,000 vertical shafts, surrounded by rainforest vegetation and deposits of blue-colored mine tailings.
